The Alex Salser Trio is a new project that features Alex Salser (guitar), Kevin Johnson (double-bass), and Sam Carolla (drums). The three have a long history of playing as backing musicians together and recently started collaborating on their own compositions. Alex and Kevin met at Shenandoah Conservatory in 2010, and since then, have been performing as a duo and in several bands together. Their shared passion for both jazz and Americana music has fostered an improvisation-based approach while adding in elements of traditional Appalachian Music. Starting in 2016, Sam Carolla joined the combination and brought in an energy and excitement to the group that opened up a whole new door for arranging and playing possibilities.

Alex Salser is a Virginia-based guitarist, composer, and educator. He got his start studying at Shenandoah Conservatory where he concentrated in jazz guitar. During that time Alex and a fellow SU Alum, Kate Potrykus formed Dear Creek, an Appalachian-inspired folk group that went on to play many notable venues around the country and be featured on NPR. Alex is now an adjunct instructor at American University where he teaches contemporary guitar. He is also a music instructor at The Music Loft in Herndon, VA. You can currently catch him playing in his main projects Oh He Dead, Dear Creek , and the Alex Salser Trio or as a guitarist in numerous jazz, blues, or avant-garde ensembles in the DC area.

Kevin Johnson is a freelance bassist and the managing editor for NoTreble.com, the online magazine for bassists. Though his performances revolve around jazz and bluegrass, Kevin appreciates all genres of music, from R&B to metal and everything in between. He is a true bass enthusiast and activist. In addition to writing for No Treble, he is Jazz Division Head for the Bass Coalition, which seeks to foster community and education through promoting local bass events including workshops, performances, and other events. He regularly performs with the Caleb Nei Jazz Trio, The Plate Scrapers, and singer-songwriter Kipyn Martin.

Sam Carolla is a performing musician in the greater DC metro area, and a native Virginian. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in Jazz Studies from George Mason University. From the age of 12, Sam was influenced by alternative rock drummers and soon became inspired by the sounds of jazz and fusion. Sam has performed with Wade Beach, Victor Provost, Kenny Rittenhouse, Steve Novosel, Eric Alexander, The Peter Edelman Trio, and many other prominent jazz artists.
